PARTNERS > ADAM HEDGES
Guide, adventurer, conservationist and policy maker, Adam Hedges is the real deal. Respected throughout the industry for his knowledge, the quality of his practice and for the level of thinking he brings to the business of conservation, he is a man born to safari.
Having spent much of his childhood learning the ropes aboard the so-called Turkana Bus, the family’s Kenya-based safari business and quite literally "the roughest bus in the world," Adam’s introduction to the world of guiding was very much of the "sink or swim" variety. Every trip into Kenya’s northern wilderness was an adventure, as grueling as it was rewarding, the kind that demanded he know as much about the inner workings of a Bedford truck as he did the climate and the behaviour of animals. It was, in short, the finest outdoor classroom he could have hoped for.
And it decided the course of his life. A lover of wide open spaces, of nature, and of the systems that allow for the sheer complexity of life as we know it, Adam’s subsequent career – in Kenya and then Botswana - was driven by a hunger for adventure, for discovery and experience. It should be no surprise then to learn that he has traveled the length of Africa several times - by hitch hiking, flying, and most recently by motorbike - or that he became a fully qualified pilot at the relatively young age of eighteen. Experiencing great space, be it the land or the sky, is for Adam what really matters: its great freedom.
All the same, such a life, however free, whatever its "rough and tumble" nature, comes with great responsibility – to the land and to the people it holds. Adam’s work in Botswana, his base for over 25 years, has seen him develop a safari business based on principles that value the wilderness as a near priceless asset. Hence the quality of the mobile safari he offers. Hence his work with regards to the setting up of exclusive operator sites in the likes of the Okavango and Moremi National Park. And hence the role he’s played as a member of the Executive Committee of Botswana’s Tourism Board.
As many an Adam Hedges safari guest will testify, this wonderful mix of unfettered spirit, practicality and vision makes for the very finest of guides. While he would be the last person to say so, his knowledge of northern Botswana is unrivaled - as are the diverse nature of the safaris he offers. The opportunity to safari with Adam means to experience the wilderness by foot, horse, elephant, vehicle and air; it means to be in the Okavango on one day, meeting with the Bushmen of the Kalahari on another, flying over the Namib Desert the next, and all the time piecing together the jigsaw of the evolution of early man, and of the vast eco-systems he calls home. It is one of the most original, sophisticated and extraordinary experiences one could hope for.
Adam lives and works in Maun, Botswana. He is married to his business partner, Brigitte, and has two children, Shane and Tristan.
