PHIL WEST > GUESTBOOK
"A young African hand (Phil West) extraordinary in his knowledge of the bush, its flora and fauna, he ranges in expertise from such as ants to elephants,... purple-flowering hypoestes plants to sodom apples..." Bud Collins, Boston Globe
"While some people can speak several languages and translate ancient manuscripts and hieroglyphics, Phil West can read the signs in the sands." Michael J. Woods Financial Times, London
"The Safari was beyond our wildest imaginations, the staff were brilliant, the tented camps luxurious, the guides so knowledgeable...the sunset at the Sand River was spectacular and we will never forget the morning teas!! We have made so many friends and hope to come back soon, thank you, thank you!" Jane Bonano, San Diego, California
"By his profound knowledge ranging from flowers to elephants, his competence as a guide, and by his kind and helpful company Phil made our walking safari in the Masai Mara an unforgettable adventure." Peter and Elsa Mueller, Dinhard, Switzerland
"Your enthusiasm for bush life is contagious; your knowledge encyclopaedic. We were awe-inspired by Kenya and by the overall experience of walking through the bush. Even the limited amount of tracking and bush skills we learnt were enough to inspire an irresistible urge to return again. We are completely bitten by the Africa bug and are already turning our minds to next year." Lindsay Johnson, London, UK
"As I think we told you, on all our previous safaris it has been the quality of the guiding which has determined how much we enjoyed and got out of the trip. I think we would both agree yours was of the best we have encountered. Thank you for making our drives entertaining and exciting, at the same time as demonstrating what seemed like your encyclopedic knowledge of the bush, and its flora and fauna." Ian and Silvia Woods
"I just wanted to tell you that I have traveled with a lot of guides, lots of people who have put our trips together, etc. and you were by far the BEST EVER!!!!
I enjoyed the trip so much more than I ever imagined I could enjoy a trip and I have been on a lot trips in the last 20 years.
Your personal touch from the moment that we landed at 2:00 in the morning till we parted ways in the Atlanta airport was amazing.
I loved every single detail from the cheese factory in Zuleta, to the guitar maker and textile weaver and Panama hat shop in Cuenca to the opera singers in Quito.
Then of course as we snorkeled in the Galapagos it was as if you would cue each amazing creature to ENTER STAGE LEFT! From reef and Galapagos sharks, to enormous manta rays, penguins hopping in the water off the rocks,
to dolphins bow riding and whales frolicking close by and don't forget the fabulous mating dances by the albatross, the blue footed boobies and the huge red sack on the frigate bird, that was FRIGGING crazy, get it?? I loved our sushi night and I have a huge crush on Raphael, Lenin, Soloman, Jean Pierre, Jefferson, the captain and Deborah from the Grace. What an amazing team. Truly wonderful people along with Gonzalo and Diego.
So . . . . . THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for 2 weeks of memories that I will treasure forever. Thank you for being so wonderful to my children. Julie, Harry and Brian loved every moment with you beginning with the pre-trip and all the way through till the end.
Your personality is infectious, your enthusiasm, joy and zest for life contagious and your knowledge on EVERY subject in the world is unbelievable. It is my hope that we can enjoy another trip with you so let's shoot for next summer!!!
We must be on the same page tonight for I just saw that you have sent pictures to the dropbox!! I am thrilled and now anxious to go and look at them.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU from the depths of my heart and all my love and best wishes to you, Rachel and to little Jack."
-Cynthia Fralin, Virginia, Galapagos and Andes, May 2013
"Recently returned from another fabulous family safari with our friend, the incredibly fun and exceedingly talented, Mr. West. Thanks to Phil, we stayed in amazing camp sites and at beautiful lodges, where the staff was top notch, the food was stupendous and the wine flowed. We saw spectacular wildlife, including leopard, white rhino and a wildebeest river crossing; of which (with Phil's help), we were able to get some pretty fantastic photographs. Needless to say, we had an absolute blast…thanks, Phil!" xx's Doug, Page, Elly, Owen, Carol, Debs & Safari Bob - Kenya, July 2014
"The moment you meet PHIL WEST, Royal African Safaris Guide and Partner, you get that familiar feeling you’ve met before. And, if you’ve spent a lifetime seeking out the world’s most exciting adventures, you just may have crossed paths with him previously at least once or twice! Frankly, it won’t take you long to realize that this young gentleman whom you now have the opportunity to explore one of the planet’s wildest and wondrous continent—AFRICA, is truly larger than LIFE! And, when you’re carving a continent of Africa’s magnitude and scope—trust me, PHIL WEST is the man you’ll want to carve and clear your path!
PHIL DEFIES ALL ODDS… Phil’s resume includes, but is not limited to being the presenter on Discovery Channel’s program, “I Shouldn’t Be Alive – Jaws of Death” – and the “Survival Expert” on Bear Grylls’ African Savannah episode on the “Ultimate Survival/Man vs. Wild” program—both cover subjects in which Phil is definitely qualified to speak on after outwrestling, outsmarting a horrific 10 foot crocodile! The scars on his upper right arm profiles the story of a man of courage, strength and perseverance…a man who defied the odds and continues to live life on his own terms.
BACKGROUND CHECK… Phil was born in Kenya and spent the best times of his childhood in the bushveld, where his love for all facets of the African bush was nurtured. You will quickly discover that Phil’s African knowledge is not limited to his native Kenya. If I had to describe the scope of his intellect in one word, I would undeniably use the term, “encyclopedic”! By the time your week or two with Phil is completed, you will depart with new insight and knowledge in tracking, ethnobotany, ethology, and be more than ready to WOW all your friends as you articulate your new discoveries of the African flora and fauna! And, if you want proof of your African adventures—no worries, Phil is also a talented photographer and will be happy to assist you in capturing the best images of your epic African experience.
Phil’s love and knowledge of the great outdoors was further fueled when he traveled to the northern hemisphere where he pursued his academic studies in the subjects of African History and Tourism, earning a Degree at Oxford Brookes University in England. Thereafter, Phil returned to South Africa to learn straight from the best and brightest in Field Guiding—for 18 months he came under the tutelage of ex-Selous Scouts and SKS trainers. If you want to see Phil’s eyes sparkle, ask this A-student to track a Lion or a Rhino—two of his favorite creatures! Phil successfully trained to Level 3 of FGASA (Field Guide Association of South Africa) and also serves on the committee of the Kenyan Guides Association. It was Phil who compiled KPSGA’s Silver Syllabus, and when he is not guiding Safaris for the Who’s Who of European Royals, Hollywood’s roster of A-list celebrities, or even a regular ESCAPESEEKER who shares his passion for Africa’s wonders—you will find Phil training other Kenyan guides in all categories, to ensure that Africa’s future in responsible expeditions and tourism remains as vibrant as the African sun. Thank you ROYAL AFRICAN SAFARIS for assigning such an inspiring, brilliant, fun, and witty person to show us just how WILD and WONDROUS AFRICA can be!"
- Mel Gee Henderson, Presenter and Executive Producer, Escapeseekers - South Africa, Zambia, and Botswana Safari, January 2012
"WE MISS YOU!!! Oh my gosh, all we can talk about is how we would rather be on a game drive with you than back in the states in our ho hum routines, we liked our Africa routine!!! What an amazing trip! It definitely ranks as all of our "all time HIGH" for trips and vacations we've taken. Your incredible knowledge, amazing guiding and fabulous storytelling made us fall in love with Africa! We are so fortunate that you were recommended to us. Thank you for such a special trip and making each day special!" The Maguire Family, Dallas, Texas - Kenya, July 2013
We want to thank you for organizing yet another 'once in a lifetime' safari. Not only did we have superb experiences, but traveling with you is like family. Your passion for what you do and the care for your clients is unmatched. We always love our days together with you.
Until the next time: Adios.
Love, Kito and Jane.
